Who created the video
This video was created in 2014 by the UNICEF Global Office of Research and Foresight (UNICEF-Innocenti), in collaboration with the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3IE), RMIT University in Melbourne Australia, and BetterEvaluation.org. It is the seventh methodological brief in a series on impact evaluation.
What does it offer
This 9-minute video highlights variations of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), conditions necessary for obtaining valid results, and limitations of this design.
The video covers the concept of random assignment, including variations such as factorial designs and cluster randomization. It compares times when RCTs are vs. are not useful and explains the issues of selection bias, attrition, and contamination. Ethical considerations, informed consent, and generalizability are also discussed.
This resource would be helpful for a researcher designing an RCT by providing background on terms and methodology to consider.
